Week 8: Curse of the Lunge

Well, here I am reporting back from my first officially week of PHASE 2: Muscle Building. I survived, just barely! Last week I completed 3 sessions of sweaty muscle building fun.. aka lifting heavy objects until my limbs turned to JELLO. I fully intended on doing a spin class on the weekend (trying to build that into my routine) but man oh man.. I could barely get to a seated position without bracing myself on a wall haha..

I am pretty sure I know what got to me.. LUNGES.. my gosh.. who created those? Some sort of torture loving sadist I imagine.. someday when I have kids, I’m not going to ground them, I’m going to make them do lunges.. that’ll teach them! 1 set of 12 for every minute they are late past curfew!!! Just imagine.. moms out there, who wants to implement this strategy and get back to me with an effectiveness rating on this punishment?!

Food for Thought: Ham, Zucchini, and Gruyere Frittata

I have a confession: my true culinary love is baking. That’s right, I REALLLLLLLY like making cookies, pies, cupcakes you name it. If only they didn’t have any calories!!! Anyways, when it comes to baking there is one woman who I hold above all others. One name that rings loud and clear, say it with me, MARTHA STEWART! I love Martha so much, I named my mixer after her… Image<— This is Martha. The day I got Martha for Christmas from my parents was easily one of the happiest moments of my life. I kid you not.. I just sat there balling my eyes out shaking the box.. there’s a video somewhere maybe it will resurface to bring you Christmas cheer in a few months.

Week 7: Happy People Don’t Kill Their Husbands..

I’m excited to announce that week 7 was the last week in the “Foundations” portion of my training!! This means I made it through Phase 1, I’m still alive, I’m still excited, and I’m feeling more motivated than ever to continue. Last week I completed 3 sessions with my trainer and 1 spin class. Let’s chat about what I’ve been able to accomplish so far in 7 weeks of training (more realistically 6 as there was one week I was out of commission..)

When I started in July, I was exhausted after 1 set of 10 squats carrying no additional weight. But check out where I am now:

Squats completed to date: 870 (ALMOST 1000!! presently with 25-30 lbs of added weight in 5 sets of 12 reps!!)

Squats remaining: 9,130

Single Arm rows: from 15 to 25 lbs, Dead lifts: from 15 to 35lbs, Chest Press: from 15 to 25 lbs. I’ve also been able to loose appx 8-10 total inches.. including 3 inches from my waist alone! I’m super happy and can feel how much stronger I’m becoming, which is a good thing because I know what’s coming next: PHASE 2: BUILD (building muscles!! the weights are going to get heavier, faster… someone pray for me haha).

If you’re out there reading this and contemplating starting a new fitness routine but you’re kind of scared, please.. tell the fear to take a hike and JUST DO IT! I couldn’t be happier. You won’t know until you experience it, but I have to say, every time I leave the gym I get a huge surge of happiness! I know this is common, people always talk about it.. something to do with endorphins. Remember the movie Legally Blonde? When Reese Witherspoon says something about exercise making you happy and happy people just don’t kill their husbands.. she’s right! It’s true.

Make the change, you will literally be HAPPY you did.

Food for Thought: Gnocchi Chicken Minestrone

I don’t know how the rest of you feel about soup, but personally I’ve never considered it a meal. Typically I find it doesn’t fill me up, just kind of holds me over for an hour or two until I can get to some real food. Let me just say : THIS SOUP IS DIFFERENT!!! This soup is by far and away the greatest soup I have ever eaten, hands down!

My mom made this soup for me when I got home from the hospital.. some might say it was so delicious because it was made with extra mom love and also the first thing I had eaten in 5 days. So I thought I would try to make it to see if it was as good the second time around.. I’m pleased to report, IT WAS!
